The specialist team from Laois are trained to work in confined spaces

A special team from Laois County Fire and Rescue Service assisted their colleagues from Offaly in rescuing a dog which fell down a deep well earlier today.

The firefighters attended a call at a disused well at Oxmantown Mall, Birr, Co Offaly at around 11am this morning.

A Bernese Mountain Dog had fallen into the well which was around 30 feet deep and four feet wide but didn’t contain any water. The well is located close to the gated entrance to Birr Castle.

A specialist confined space rescue team from Laois County Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident and helped to successfully rescue the large dog from the well.

Fire crews spent over four hours removing the dog from the well.
