WATCH: Laois Rose Sinead Dowd namechecks Portlaoise pupils in Rose of Tralee interview with Daithi

Laois Rose Sinead Dowd had to wait until the end of night one of the International Rose of Tralee for her big stage interview, reciting a beautiful poem she composed with her students at Scoil Chriost Rí in Portlaoise.

Looking stunning in a blue gown for Laois, New York native Sinead described how she moved on her own to Ireland after begging her Laois born parents to let her go live with her auntie Claire on the farm in Cullohill.

"I'd say I watched PSI Love You a hundred times over and just cried and cried and finally with loads of convincing, they finally let me move to Ireland so I'm living here nearly 10 years".

Her boyfriend of nine years got a big mention too, while her mam Grainne looked on tearfully as Sinead read out her poem.

The next 16 Roses will be interviewed on Tuesday night, August 22 with the winner of the International Rose of Tralee 2023 to then be announced. Sinead is currently the 8th favourite to win the event, which would make her the first ever Laois Rose to bring home the coveted sash. Best of luck Sinead!
