A Portlaoise man has been chosen to represent Laois and Kildare in a national carers award ceremony.

Richard Casey is a professional carer for Comfort Keepers Homecare Ireland, who have chosen him as one of their nine finalists for the National Carer of the year 2018 awards.

Speaking about being awarded a regional award, Richard says his granny also had a carer.

"I would always approach a client like I would expect that carer to approach my granny," he said.

He has given palliative care for clients in their final days.

"I'm still connected to those families, it seems a bit surreal, but you know you're part of that family now," he said.

Richard and all the regional award winners will now compete for Comfort Keepers’ national award at a gala ceremony taking place at Kilashee House Hotel, on November 30.

The awards in their 8th year, recognise individual carers for their outstanding service.

Brid Gould is Managing Director.

“Each year we are astounded by the quality of the entries and by how many of our people go above and beyond the call of duty. And each year their colleagues, clients and managers see this and can’t help but nominate them. On behalf of Comfort Keepers I’d like to pass on our congratulations to everyone who was nominated and to all of our regional winners. I am so proud to be involved in such a special evening, recognising their extraordinary efforts," she said.

The best of luck to Richard from everyone in Laois.
