A volunteer all terrain driver filmed the conditions in the Slieve Blooms in Laois yesterday.
Leinster 4 X 4 Voluntary Response driver Stephen Murphy took the footage of the snow covered roads around Wolfhill on Sunday.
The voluntary organisation was set up by friends Joe Kavanagh, Nigal Lombard and Fergus Lennon in 2020.
“We have about 37/38 drivers registered to assist if required and if available... it’s totally voluntary, and all our vehicles are tested, insured, taxed and maintained at owners expense,” Joe explained.
The group operates through their Facebook page. People can message and request assistance. The drivers then attend and assess the situation. However, if they believe there is any risk they will refer the matter to the local fire services or mountain rescue.
“All our 4 x 4’s are fully modified for these conditions. In the very bad snow conditions we assist the Garda/ Emergency services where needed and all our work is fully voluntary, we assist the public on a regular basis,” said Joe.
The organisation has between 20 and 30 four wheel drive vehicles operating in Leinster to assist during snow, ice and floods.
