Age & Opportunity and Portlaoise Library collaborate to build resilience and confidence with life changes that come with ageing

New support is on offer for Laois people experiencing change in mid to later life through a new initiative in Portlaoise.

Age & Opportunity, a charity that works to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of older people, is invites people to take part in Changing Gears in collaboration with Portlaoise Library this November and December 2026.

The organisers say Changing Gears is designed to boost wellbeing and resilience for those aged 50 years and over.

“It offers participants time to develop skills and techniques, build resilience and confidence in managing life changes or transitions. Reframe change as opportunity with positive options and also challenging negative stereotypes about ageing,” say the organisers.

Changing Gears runs over five weeks with weekly sessions of 2.5 hours. It takes place on Wednesdays, November 4, 11, 18 and 25 and December 2 from 10:30 am - 1 pm.

The course is HSE funded and free of charge. Participation requires attendance at each of the sessions. Refreshments will be provided.

To book your place, please contact Fiona on [email protected] or call on 01 913 3922.

Age & Opportunity describes itself as the national organisation creating opportunities that empower older people to enhance individual and community wellbeing through participation in physical activity and recreational sport, arts and creativity, personal development and active citizenship initiatives.
