Laois school lifts lockdown following arrest of man

A Laois school has confirmed with the Leinster Express / Laois Live that they have lifted a lockdown instated this morning.

Scoil Mhuire Abbeyleix went into lockdown following reports of a male in the area, who has allegedly shared threats online.

The school has confirmed that they posted a message to all parents labeled 'precaution' to the Aladdin App:

"Dear Parent/Guardian, we are aware of rumours circulating in Abbeyleix this morning. Please be reassured that we are doing everything in our power to keep the children and staff safe. Everyone will remain indoors today or until we hear otherwise. Thank you for your co-operation with this matter."

A second update was issued to all parents within the school, following the arrest of the individual.

"Dear Parent/Guardian, we have been contacted by the locals Guards. A man has been apprehended and is in custody.
We thank the local Guards for watching out so diligently for us. Normal workings in the school resume."

Gardaí investigating alleged threats shared online have arrested one male in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois this morning, Wednesday May 28.

"The arrested male is currently detained at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984," Gardaí confirmed.

"There is no ongoing threat to public safety at this time. As a person is now in custody there is no further comment at this time," a spokesperson said.

"It follows a whirl of rumours on social media in recent days, raised by Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley at the May meeting of Laois County Council on Monday.

"She called for the return of Garda community policing meetings to speak on local crime issues, saying the rumours "may be complete rubbish but people in the community are terrified".
