A man has been arrested in a Laois town following alleged threats made online.
Laois Gardaí investigating alleged threats shared online arrested one male in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois on the morning of Wednesday May 28.
A Garda spokesperson has confirmed that the arrested male is currently being detained at "a Garda Station in the Eastern Region" under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
The act means that they can be detained for 24 hours.
The Gardaí have emphasised that "there is no ongoing threat to public safety at this time".
"As a person is now in custody there is no further comment at this time," they say.
It follows a whirl of rumours on social media in recent days, raised by Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley at the May meeting of Laois County Council on Monday. She called for the return of Garda community policing meetings to speak on local crime issues, saying the rumours "may be complete rubbish but people in the community are terrified".
