Laois pianist David Vesey launches debut album in tribute to famous Irish composer

Laois pianist David Vesey recently launched his debut album in two concerts, held in Portlaoise and Abbeyleix. Featuring the music of Turlough O’Carolan, 'Carolan Reflections' is a reimagining of the timeless works of Carolan, arranged by David Vesey.

Turlough O'Carolan, celebrated as Ireland’s most famous composer of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, holds a special place in David’s musical journey. From childhood, David was immersed in Carolan's music, first discovering this music under the guidance of his primary school teacher.

His involvement with the Spink Comhaltas branch in Laois, and Music Generation Laois deepened his connection to Carolan’s works. The first album launch was held in the Laois Music Centre in Portlaoise, in partnership with the Laois School of Music and Music Generation Laois. David gave masterclasses to young pianists and performed selections from his debut album.

A further launch was held in Abbeyleix last Saturday December 14, 2024. Musicians from Spink Comhaltas entertained the audience before David performed his Carolan arrangements.

This concert was held in St. Michael and All Angels Church, hosted generously by Canon Patrick Harvey and the Abbeyleix and Killermogh union of parishes.

Known for their captivating beauty and emotional depth, Carolan’s compositions remain instantly recognisable to traditional musicians and beyond.

Vesey’s arrangements offer listeners an intimate encounter with these melodies, infusing them with a fresh energy while maintaining their timeless essence.

"I feel privileged to share my arrangements of Carolan’s music," Vesey reflects: "These reflections are personal in nature, representing my relationship with Carolan as a composer and broader reflections on Irish identity. I hope these arrangements will bring Carolan's music to new audiences and continue his legacy in a modern context.”

Carolan Reflections is now available on all major streaming platforms, offering a unique blend of classical piano and traditional Irish music that will resonate with listeners both in Ireland and beyond.

It is also available to buy in physical form on Bandcamp, and in limited stores.
