It’s alleged €100,000 in cash was stolen from a home in Laois

Two men charged with the theft of €100,000 in cash during a burglary in Laois have been granted bail.

Roman Lakatos (56) and Roman Lavu (22) both of 47 Sean Doire, Durrow, are each accused of burglary and the theft of €100,000 in cash at a residential address in Laois on November 11, 2025.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said Lavu’s sister Laura was in court to be approved for independent surety. She said the application was not opposed by the State and his expired passport was also being handed over as per his bail conditions.

Ms Fitzpatrick said the High Court had granted bail but the independent surety needed to be approved by the district court. She said the man’s sister had €998 in her An Post account and had brought €5 to court to make the €1,000 needed.

Judge Andrew Gubbins approved the independent surety. Ms Fitzpatrick said her client had a travel card which was in the possession of the prison service and would be handed over to Gardaí upon his release.

“He has to hand it over to the prison staff and they will hand it over to Gardai,” he said.

Lakatos’s partner Iveta appeared in court and said she would provide €1,000 from her AIB account for his bail.

The court was told his passport was in the possession of the prison service and he agreed to hand it over when he took up bail.

Both men are due to appear again before Portlaoise District Court on November 9.
