Christmas lights but no cash to afford tree in Laois town

No Christmas tree in Mountrath.

Mountrath will twinkle this Christmas but the Laois town street decorations budget will not stretch to trees.

The Mountrath Christmas Lights Committee made the announcement in a public notice to the community. They thanked local people for contributing but said there would not be enough money to cover everything.

"Would like to take this opportunity to thank the community and surrounding area of Mountrath in our fundraising efforts, and the volunteers who put up the centre-piece and lights on Shannon Street.

"Unfortunately, our budget did not extend to putting up the two large Christmas trees in the town as we have ongoing costs such as insurance, ESB bills, and maintenance of the lights. All of this has left us with insufficient funds.

"However, we do plan to do fundraising in the new year and look forward to your support," said the notice.

Meanwhile the Mountrath Forum launches  its Community Hub on Saturday December 16 at 2.30pm at the Christmas Market, which runs from 12 noon until 4pm.

The Forum has announced that the Brigidine Order had donated the former schools grounds for community use.

There will also be  carol singing, a visit from Santa Claus,  a music club Christmas show, ending with the of Christmas lights switched on at 5.30pm.
