Solicitor urges Portlaoise court to wait for new laws on e-scooters

Electric scooter surge in Laois is 'absolutely crazy'

A solicitor asked for the adjournment of a case involving an electric scooter at Portlaoise District Court in anticipation of new laws.

Tyler Brennan, 20, 18 Millstream Avenue, Monasterevin, Kildare is accused of driving an e-scooter without insurance at St Evins Park in Monasterevin on May 7, 2021.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick asked that the case be adjourned.

“There is a Bill currently before the Oireachtas,” said Ms Fitzpatrick.

She said if enacted it might decriminalise the use of such scooters.

“I do think it is a matter of public importance,” she said.

“I would submit that the whole country is on them,” Ms Fitzpatrick told Judge Andrew Cody.

Judge Cody said he wouldn’t treat it as the most serious offence.

“Would you consider a hearing date later in the year,” asked Ms Fitzpatrick.

Judge Cody said he would put the matter back to April 4.
