A driver had a charge of dangerous driving reduced after he donated €2,500 to charity.

Marin Mihalachi, 29, of 24 St John's Lawn, Clondalkin, Dublin had been charged with the offence after he was caught driving at 175kph in a 120kph zone on the M7 at Ballydavis, Portlaoise on April 23 last.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client had the money to donate to the Acorn youth diversion project.

On hearing the donation was made, Judge Andrew Cody said he would reduce the charge to careless driving, which doesn’t incur an automatic driving ban.

He convicted the defendant of the lesser charge of careless driving and fined him €300 at the sitting of Portlaoise District Court.
