A man who became abusive having tried to sleep in the public office of Portlaoise Garda Station has been jailed.

Steven Breen, 37, of No Fixed Abode, pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared in court via video link at Portlaoise District Court. 

Garda Sgt JJ Kirby said the accused arrived at Portlaoise Garda Station in a highly intoxicated state at 3.10 am on September 29 last year. 

“He attempted to sleep on the floor,” said Sgt Kirby. 

When gardai woke the defendant he became abusive. 

“You are a tramp and you are nothing without that badge,” the defendant told Gardai. 

“I apologise for that. I am very sorry,” the defendant said. 

Judge Andrew Cody sentenced the man to one month in prison for being abusive. He took the charge of public intoxication into account.
