A man has appeared in court accused of issuing death threats and assaulting a prison officer at Portlaoise Prison.

Frederick Thompson, 43, with an address at Midlands Prison, Portlaoise appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court this morning.

He is accused of threatening to kill or cause serious harm to a prison officer at Portlaoise Prison on May 18, 2022. He is further charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm and assault causing harm at Portlaoise Prison on November 17, 2022.

Detective Garda Padraic Ryan gave evidence of arrest and charge and caution at Portlaoise Garda Station.  He said the defendant made no reply to the charges.

Judge Andrew Cody asked if the defendant was legally represented.

“I am representing myself,” the defendant replied.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the DPP had directed prosecution on indictment. He said the defendant was accused of two counts of threatening to kill and one charge of assault.

Sgt Kirby asked for a remand date in mid March.

“How long is that?” asked the defendant.

“I am looking for a two week remand if possible,” the defendant said.

Judge Cody asked Det Ryan whether or not a book of evidence would be ready in two weeks. Det Ryan confirmed it would.

Judge Cody remanded the defendant on bail to reappear before Portlaoise District Court on February 28 for service of the book of evidence. He said the State was to produce the defendant.

“Two week remand is it, thank you” the defendant said.

He is due to appear again before Portlaoise District Court on February 28.
