Laois boxer has drug possession case struck out

Kildare cocaine dealer jailed at Portlaoise court

Portlaoise District Court

A boxer who wasn’t in court as he was attending a weigh-in in Dublin had a case struck out in his absence at Portlaoise District Court.

Michael Nevin, 25, of 6 Harpurs Lane, Portlaoise had been accused of possession of cannabis and obstruction at Clonroosk View, Portlaoise on October 18, 2022.

However, at a previous court sitting a judge had ordered that the case should be struck out on payment of €300 to the court poor box.

A barrister for the accused said the defendant had an international tournament in Poland on Thursday and was at a weigh-in in Dublin.

“He said before the close of business today that he would have the money before the court,” the barrister explained.

Judge Nicola Andrews didn’t want to wait on the defendant.

“I am not going to hang around because he is up getting weighed-in,” she said.

Before the court ended, the barrister asked that the case would be called again as €300 had been brought to court.  Judge Andrews agreed to strike the case out.
