Portlaoise Garda Station
The Detective Unit in Portlaoise Garda Station have brought a number of individuals before the courts following a major operation to crackdown on the theft of Japanese imported vehicles.
Multiple arrests were made this week following an extensive investigation since December 2023 into unlawful taking of Japanese imported vehicles and associated criminal activities which identified ten suspects.
"Over the past week planned arrests were executed, and the individuals were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and questioned regarding various incidents of suspected involvement," said a Garda spokesperson.
"These individuals were held at various stations in Laois, Offaly, and Kildare. Throughout the questioning, admissions were made concerning 47 different offences, including robbery, unlawful trading of motor vehicles, criminal damage, and theft/deception. Following consultation with the National Juvenile Office (NJO), authorisation was received to charge a number of individuals. They were brought before the Portlaoise District Court, where strict conditions were applied.
"This operation represents a significant step in our ongoing efforts to address serious crimes associated with the criminal activities involved with vehicle theft. The success of our actions is a testament to the dedication of our officers and their commitment to maintaining public safety and upholding the law."
