Man appeared at Portlaoise District Court

A man who told a garda it was a “f**king disgrace” to be holding up traffic was fined at Portlaoise District Court.

Sean Fitzpatrick(31) of Ballymacken, Portlaoise was accused of having no insurance at Cooltederry, Portarlington on December 18, 2023.

Garda Noel Tier said the defendant was stopped driving a 04 registered silver Renault Megan. He said the car was not registered to the defendant. He made a demand for the man to produce his insurance and licence at a garda station within ten days and the defendant chose Stradbally Garda Station.

“Are you seriously going to hold up traffic? This is a f**king disgrace,” Garda Tier said the defendant commented at the roadside.

He said the defendant failed to produce documentation within ten days.

The defendant said Stradbally Garda Station had been closed for work so he produced the documentation at Portlaoise Garda Station. “It would have been maybe two days after,” he said.

Garda Tier said there was no record of the documents having been produced at a station.

Judge Andrew Cody asked “did you tell Garda Tier he was a f**king disgrace?”

“I don’t think so,” the man replied. He said there was a lot of traffic on the day.

Judge Cody fined him €500 and gave him three months to pay.

“Next time you are stopped keep your mouth shut,” he advised.
