A man was arrested after a number of cars were broken into in Portlaoise in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Gardaí said a man in his early 30s was arrested in connection to the incidents at Carmody Way in Portlaoise.

“Portlaoise Gardaí are currently investigating a series of incidents where unlocked cars were entered overnight, resulting in the theft of personal property. While an arrest has been made and the investigation continues, we urge all car owners to be vigilant,” Gardaí said.

They again reminded people to lock their cars and not to leave valuables in their vehicles.

Gardaí advised people to:

  1. Remove all valuables from your vehicle – don’t leave temptation on display.
  2. Lock your car every time, even if you’re just stepping away for a moment.
  3. Double-check that windows and doors are secured before you walk away.

Together, we can help prevent these incidents from happening again. Let’s work as a community to keep our streets safe.”
