Broke window of Laois takeaway

The incident occurred in Portlaoise

Court - Young Portlaoise man drunkenly abused gardaí

Portlaoise District Court

A court heard a man has little recollection of breaking the window of a fast food outlet in Portlaoise.

Michael  McGarry (51) of  Apartment 2, Parnell House, Parnell Street, Thurles, Tipperary admitted being intoxicated, engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour and causing €500 worth of damage to the window of Baytoon Grill, Main Street, Portlaoise on April 22 last.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby outlined the facts in the case. He said the defendant was “highly intoxicated” and became abusive and a struggle ensued when efforts were made to remove him from the premises.

“In the struggle the window was broken,” he explained. He said the man had a number of previous convictions. He said the value of damage to the window was estimated at €500.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had brought €500 to court.

“We have little recollection of the night in question,” Ms Fitzpatrick told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court

She described the accused as a “model client” and said he had brought a letter to court.

Noting the early plea, the payment of compensation and the letter which was handed in to court, Judge Nicola Andrews convicted the man and fined him €100. She granted legal aid to Ms  Fitzpatrick.
