A man admitted stealing Swedish cider, tequila beer and groceries from shops in Laois.
Jake Gibson (25) of 22 St Michael’s Park, Portarlington admitted taking three bottles of beer and groceries valued at €15.54 from Aldi, Portarlington on March 24, 2023 a €2.49 bottle of Swedish Cider from the store on November 27, 2023 and three bottles of tequila beer from the shop on December 1, 2023.
He further admitted stealing groceries valued at €16 from Centra, Main Street, Portarlington and to taking goods valued at €32.77 from Dunnes Stores in the Kyle Shopping Centre on August 24, 2024 and to having cannabis valued at €40 on the Ridge Road, Portlaoise on May 2, 2024.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant had seven previous convictions.
Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client had struggled with addiction difficulties and had periods of abstinence. He said at the time of the offending the man was struggling with addiction and was homeless. He said the man had seen an addiction counsellor.
Judge Susan Fay ordered a probation report and adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on April 14.
