Man appeared at Portlaoise District Court
A going away party resulted in a court appearance for an apprentice electrician in Laois.
Adam Brennan (27) of Redhills, Ballyroan, Abbeyleix admitted drunk driving at New Road, Portlaoise on July 6 last.
Garda Inspector Joe Culliton said the defendant was "observed driving erratically” at 1.30am on the date in question. He said he was cooperative with arresting gardaí and had no previous convictions.
Solicitor Philip Meagher said his client was a fourth year apprentice electrician who had returned from Sweden for the court case.
“On the date in question there was a family and friends occasion to mark his going away,” he explained.
He said the defendant was supposed to return home with a family member but as they had already left he drove himself. He said he was extremely embarrassed and ashamed over the incident.
Mr Meagher said his client had asked him to assure the sitting of Portlaoise District Court that it would never happen again.
Judge Andrew Cody fined the man €250 and disqualified him from driving for three years.
