Laois gardaí are advising people on what to do in relation to bogus callers and rogue traders.
Laois Offaly Garda Crime Prevention Office Sgt Graham Kavanagh issued the advice to remind people about bogus callers offering everything from tarmac jobs to gardening, power washing, gutter cleaning, and painting.
“These individuals typically call uninvited, pressuring homeowners—especially older or isolated residents—into unnecessary, overpriced, or substandard work,” he stated.
Sgt Kavanagh urged people to be aware of a number of red flags: These include cold callers offering services on the spot, claims of “working nearby” or offering a “special deal” and having no formal identification or paperwork. Other red flags include high-pressure tactics, asking for cash payment and mentioning they've been with neighbours or mentioning local names.
He advised people to always stay in control. “Don’t let a stranger dictate work—you decide what needs doing and you seek out reputable, insured tradespeople, ideally through local recommendation.
Always request multiple written quotes and never agree to work on the doorstep.
Use door chains and verify ID. Be extra vigilant for elderly or vulnerable neighbours—check in and encourage them to report suspicious callers,” he said.
Sgt Kavanagh urged people to “report all suspicious activity immediately to Gardaí. Timely information helps prevent others being targeted.”
