The Laois Offaly town of Portarlington was hit by a spate of crimes over Halloween.

Gardaí are investigating three criminal incidents that took place over Thursday and Friday, October 30 and 31.

They are working on the theory that two of the incidents are related, both being thefts from cars.

One took place in the Droughill area, at some time between 6pm on Thursday, October 30 and 9am on Halloween morning.

A Garda spokesperson told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that the window was broken in a car, with a theft taking place.

The second happened on the Link Road on Friday, Halloween, some time between 12 midnight and 2.30pm that afternoon.

"A car window was again smashed. A small sum of money was taken. We are appealing for any witnesses of either incident to contact us," they said.

Then on Halloween night, at 8.30pm, two unknown males carried out "criminal damage" to a car, in St Joseph's Terrace, Portarlington.

"They damaged the windscreen of another vehicle. There was a person in that vehicle at the time," the Gardaí say.

There was no description given of the males involved. Again any witnesses are asked to contact the Gardaí.

Overall however, Halloween in Laois "went well".

"It may have been helped by the fact that a lot more Gardaí were on duty," the spokesperson said.
