Man arrested in Midlands Prison released without charge

The man was returned to the Midlands Prison on Tuesday evening

Gardaí released a man who was arrested as part of this investigation into an alleged assault causing harm at the Midlands Prison on Saturday, December 6. 

The man in his 20s was arrested in the Midlands Prison, Portlaoise by Gardaí from the Serious Crime Unit, Laois/Offaly Garda Division on Tuesday morning. He was held for a number of hours before being released and returned to prison on Tuesday night. 

He is the fifth man to be arrested in relation to the alleged assault in the Midlands Prison. Four men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested in connection with the incident on Friday. All four have since been released without charge and returned to the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise

The man who was arrested on Tuesday is reported to be known to the 4 year-old Tadhg Farrell and Mary Holt(60) who were murdered in an arson attack on Ms Holt’s home in Edenderry, Co Offaly on the evening of December 6, 2025.
