A book of evidence was served on a man who is accused of rape and sexual assault in Laois.

The man (47), who has a Laois address and cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of raping a woman in Laois on a date between December 1, 2018 and March 20, 2019 and four counts of sexual assault on a woman in Laois on dates between October 1, 2017 and December 31, 2018.

Garda Lisa Murray gave evidence of serving a book of evidence on the accused at Portlaoise District Court.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the DPP had directed that the defendant be sent forward to the current sittings of the Central Criminal Court.

Judge Andrew Cody issued the man with the standard alibi warning and sent the case forward to the current sittings of the Central Criminal Court. He remanded him on bail on the same conditions as set at Portlaoise District Court. Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald requested legal aid for two counsel.

Judge Cody granted the application and said reporting restrictions are to continue in the case.
