A teenager appeared in court accused of assaulting a man in Portlaoise.

The boy (17), who has a Laois address and cannot be named due to his age, is accused of assault causing harm in Lyster Square, Portlaoise on March 29, 2025. He is also accused of engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour and with affray in Lyster Square on March 30, 2025.

He appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court where Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby gave an outline of the assault allegation.

Sgt Kirby said an injured party alleged he was attacked by two youths at Lyster Square, Portlaoise, on March 29 at around 5pm. He said the man had a cut to the back of his head and stated that he had been struck on the back of the head with a  metal object. Sgt Kirby said there was no medical report before the court.

Judge Peter White said “then I am not going to make any assessment on jurisdiction”.  He said he would remand the teenager on bail until a medical report was before the court.

Solicitor Philip Meagher said he wasn’t sure how long the report would take.

Judge White granted legal aid and adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on March 9 for a medical report.
