Gardaí give update following high speed chase with stolen car in Laois

Gardaí have provided an update on the two teenagers who were arrested following an intercounty high speed chase involving a stolen car last week. 

Laois Gardaí detected the stolen car travelling in excess of 200km/h on Thursday, 8 January, before it made its way towards Tipperary.

The car passed through the toll bridge on the M7 motorway and continued on into Tipperary with Gardaí from Laois and later Tipperary in pursuit.

The car was involved in a collision near Birdhill in Tipperary and the two teenage boys exited the vehicle before being arrested at around 1.10am on Friday morning, 9 January.

A Garda car is understood to have sustained minor damage during the incident. 

A Garda spokesperson told Leinster Express / Laois Live that An Garda Síochána received a report of an incident of theft in the Doon area of County Limerick at approximately 5:30am on Thursday morning.

They said: "A male youth and a male aged in his late teens have since been arrested. The male youth was released pending a referral to the Garda Youth Diversion Programme.

"The male aged in his late teens was due to appear in front of Nenagh District Court on Friday, 9 January 2026."

The Garda spokesperson concluded: "As this is now a matter for the courts, no further information is available."
