Bail granted to man accused of burgling Laois pub

Strict conditions were applied to the bail

Planning granted at Humes Pub despite complaint over 'outrageous noise'

A man who is accused of burgling a Portlaoise pub has been released on bail. 

James Patrick O’Donnell (46) of 67 St Brigid’s Place, Portlaoise, is accused of burglary, criminal damage, trespass and the theft of €1,900 from Humes Pub at 106 Main Street, Portlaoise on January 8, 2026. He is also accused of possessing drugs for sale or supply at his address in Portlaoise on January 8, 2026. 

His brother Denis O’Donnell appeared before Portlaoise District Court and was approved to act as independent surety in the case. 

The accused was granted bail subject to a number of strict conditions. They include a curfew, signing on conditions and his exclusion from all licensed premises.   

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said she believed the prosecution was awaiting DPP directions in the case.  

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said two months would be required for directions in relation to the matter.

Judge Susan Fay adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on March 16 for DPP directions.
