A man appeared in court accused of ‘shouting and roaring’ at staff in a shop in Mountrath.

Michael Tuohy (47) of Dysart Beg, Mountrath pleaded guilty to engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at Spar Express, Limerick Road, Mountrath on May 30, 2025.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the incident occurred at around 6.40pm on the date in question.

“He was intoxicated and he was shouting at staff”, Sgt Kirby told a sitting of Portlaoise District Court. He said the man was asked to leave the shop which he described as being busy at the time.

“He was shouting and roaring at them and then he was threatening and abusive”, said Sgt Kirby.

Judge Susan Fay asked that the man be assessed for community service. Once the assessment was completed and he was deemed suitable, she recalled the case. She then convicted the man and sentenced him to 40 hours of community service in lieu of 10 weeks in prison.
