Gardaí seized a car and around €10,000 of drugs from a motorist they observed struggling to drive in a straight line on the M7 motorway.

The drugs and Volkswagen Golf car were seized by Laois Roads Policing Unit(RPU) during a patrol of the motorway.

“Laois RPU patrolling the M7 stopped this VW Golf after it was observed having great difficulty driving in a straight line.

Checks showed the vehicle’s tax and NCT were both expired… not the best start,” Gardaí stated in an online post.

“A strong smell of cannabis from the vehicle led to a search, uncovering quite a few more “lines” of enquiry… with approximately €10,000 worth of Cocaine and Cannabis seized,” Gardaí said.

Gardaí said “the driver subsequently failed a roadside drug test and was arrested at the scene. During interview, Gardaí noted a number of creative “lines” of excuses… none of which held up,” they added.

The driver was charged and is due to appear before Portlaoise District Court.
