Portlaoise District Court
A woman who drunkenly asked gardai ‘why don’t you go arrest foreigners’ returned from Scotland to deal with a court case in Laois.
Susan Byrne, 57, with an address at 10 Jessop Street, Portlaoise admitted public order offences at the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise on June 22 last.
Sgt JJ Kirby said when Gardai were called to the location by members of the public at 8pm and they discovered the defendant who was slurring her speech. She said to Gardai, “why don’t you go arrest foreigners,” he told the court. He said she had two minor previous convictions.
Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client had relocated to Scotland but returned for the court case. He said her husband had suffered an “untimely” death and the woman has underlying issues.
Judge Michelle Finan read a probation report which had been prepared for the case. She noted the woman had fully cooperated with the probation services, the report was positive and the woman had travelled back for the case. Judge Finan noted “you are dealing with the issues now.”
Judge Finan finalised the case and bound the woman to the peace for 12 months.
