Portlaoise woman locked out of the house abused the gardaí

A woman caused a disturbance on New Year’s Eve after her parents locked her out of the house stopping her from seeing her child.

Before Portlaoise District Court was Alison McEvoy (24).

Sgt JJ Kirby gave evidence that on December 31, 2017, the gardaí were called to the scene of a domestic dispute in Portlaoise.

The accused was outside the house highly intoxicated and in a distressed state, claiming that her parents would not let her into the house to see her child. Sgt Kirby explained that the child was inside the house with the accused’s parents and the child’s father.

The accused became abusive to the gardaí at the scene and would not heed their advice. She was arrested and continued to be abusive towards the gardaí.

The accused had one previous conviction, for unauthorised carriage in an MPV.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said the accused, a young mother, had written a letter of apology.

Defence said that the offence happened on New Year’s Eve and the accused had been socialising with her partner.

Ms Fitzpatrick said the accused didn’t realise she had consumed so much drink and an argument ensued. She couldn’t gain access to the house to see her child, and when the gardaí arrived she reacted badly.

The matter was put back to April 5 for a probation report.
