Man stole from Dunnes Stores in Laois

The man appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court
A man appeared before Portlaoise District Court for stealing from Dunnes Stores in Laois on five occasions.
Greg Doyle (48) of 18 Railway Mews, Portarlington, Laois stole groceries valued at €24.08 from Dunnes Stores, Kyle Shopping Centre, Portlaoise on April 20 and €23.21 on April 22 and €29 worth on April 23. He took groceries valued at €36.44 and €36.24 on April 27, 2026.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant’s last conviction dated back to 2010 at Dublin Circuit Court where he was convicted of possessing firearms and ammunition in suspicious circumstances.
Solicitor Brian Duffy said his client had previously pleaded guilty to the thefts without having had disclosure. He said the man had brought a sum of €150 in compensation to court.
Mr Duffy described his client as someone who has “suffered significantly” and who lost three brothers in a car accident in 2012.
Mr Duffy said the man had been working in Dunnes and the thefts were mindless rather than malicious. He said the man was engaging with a treatment centre, had compensated the injured party and was now engaged with the LOETB.
Judge Tom MacSharry noted that “it appeared he had been doing well but had a relapse” and he fined him €350 and gave him three months to pay.
