Teenager admits Portlaoise cemetery violence

Violence broke out during Cemetery Mass in Portlaoise
A teenager has pleaded guilty to taking part in violent disorder in Portlaoise Cemetery during Cemetery Sunday earlier this year.
The teenager (17), who has an Offaly address and cannot be named due to his age, admitted possessing a knife and engaging in violent disorder at St Peter and Paul’s Cemetery in Portlaoise on May 31, 2026.
Solicitor Aonghus McCarthy said his client was pleading guilty and would benefit from a probation and welfare report.
He said his client was “in the wrong place at the wrong time” and as a result had felt obliged to take part in the incident which involved a number of individuals.
Judge Andrew Gubbins said he would note the guilty plea and adjourn the case back to Portlaoise District Court on December 7 for a probation report.
