The woman appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court

A woman who discarded a white packet from her underwear during a search has admitted to drug possession.

Louise McInerney (41) of 86 Lake Drive, Kilminchy appeared before Portlaoise District Court accused of obstruction and having drugs for personal use at her address on July 16 last.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the incident occurred at 7.30pm while Gardaí conducted a planned search of her address. He said the woman attempted to flee and “discarded a white substance from her underwear” which was found to be drugs valued at €80.

Solicitor Philip Meagher said when Gardaí attended at the property with a warrant his client “panicked” and “fled from the immediate vicinity”. He said she was apologetic and it was “not an example she wants to show to her children”.

Mr Meagher said the woman has informed him that she was no longer taking any drugs.“She would say that was a temporary dalliance,” he said.

Judge Andrew Gubbins expressed concern that there were children present at the time.

Mr Meagher said the children were downstairs in the property at the time.

Judge Gubbins granted legal aid and sentenced the woman to three months and suspended the sentence for 12 months. He also ordered that she attend the Athy Alternative Project.
