Death of well known and loved Laois community and GAA man

The late Ger O'Mahony from Mountmellick.

The death has taken place of a well known and much loved community and family man from Laois.

Mountmellick native Ger O'Mahony passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 7.

Mr O'Mahony had served as the town's General Services Supervisor with Laois County Council for 15 years, working with Mountmellick Town Council to improve his town, retiring in 2017. Prior to that he had a butcher's shop in the town. 

He was also involved with Mountmellick GAA for many years and was a keen golfer.

Mr O'Mahony is survived by his beloved wife Bríd, his children Sinead, Donie, Geraldine, Finola, Donnacha and Ciarán, grandchildren and extended family. 

Tributes online are remembering Ger for his warm smile, his kindness and sense of humour.

Mountmellick GAA club shared photos of Ger and the following lovely tribute.

"We are deeply saddened following the passing of our fellow club member Ger O’Mahony.

"Ger played at all levels in hurling and football with our club. He won Laois Junior Football championship ship in 1966, Intermediate Hurling championship in 1967, Intermediate Football championship in 1968 and Intermediate Hurling League in 1980 and 1982.

"Ger was a dedicated player and member of Mountmellick GAA, a regular fixture in Páirc Acragar and he watched on in pride as his children and grandchildren went on to do the same.

"Ger was an absolute gentleman to everyone he met and we are so lucky to have known him. Our thoughts are with his wife Bríd, his children Sinéad, Geraldine, Donal, Finola, Ciáran, and Donnachadh, his sons and daughters in law, his grandchildren, his brothers and sisters, his extended family and his many, many friends. Go raibh maith agat Ger agus códladh sámh. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis".

Ger was predeceased by his sister Frances. Beloved wife of Brid, dearly loved dad to Sinead, Geraldine, Donal, Finola, Ciáran, and Donnachadh. Cherished grandfather to James, Lucy, Tadhg, Emma, Mathuin, Dáithi, Culann, Senein, Blaithnaid, Thady, Oisin, Riltin, Sadhbh, Iarla, Cora, Aoileann and Eanna, sons-in-law John, Tim, J.P., daughters-in-law Patrice, Darina, Fiona. Deeply missed by his brothers and sisters John, Ciss, Teresa, Mary, Patrick, Anne. Loved by his extended family, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, grandnieces, grandnephews and all his beloved friends.

Reposing this Wednesday evening in Moloney's Funeral Home from 6pm with Recital of the Rosary at 8.30pm. Requiem Mass on Thursday at 11am in St. Joseph's Church, Mountmellick. Burial after in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Family flowers only - Donations to Irish Cancer Society.
