Laois village to get flood relief funding from Office of Public Works

Laois flood prevention work approved for Government cash
Minister Kevin “Boxer” Moran has this Monday, August 31 announced funding approval from the Minor Flood Mitigation Works, for Brittas Stream in Clonaslee.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved Laois County Council’s application for the funding.
The €27,000 will pay for pre-construction; AA screening of a stream/culvert, culvert design/hydro model (area included in Clonaslee FRS) construction, the replacement of an existing culvert in Brittas stream and vegetation removal and grading of an existing stream from culvert to the River Clodiagh.
The Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme was introduced by the Office of Public Works in 2009. Since then, 12 funding applications by Laois County Council have been supported under this scheme (see https://www.floodinfo.ie/county-summary/).
The scheme funds smaller projects up to €2 million each, and studies up to €750,000 each, with the OPW covering up to 95% of costs.
The scheme is also paying for three major Laois flood prevention works, according to the OPW update.
The Clonaslee Flood Relief Scheme will protect 74 properties from future floods and is at Stage III: Detailed Design stage.
It’s paying for the Mountmellick Flood Relief Scheme to protect 165 properties. That project is at Stage II: Planning Process. Portarlington Flood Relief Scheme will protect 72 properties and is at Stage I: Scheme Development and Preliminary Design.
Over the past 16 years, the OPW has given nearly €572,000 to 12 other Laois minor flood prevention works, like removing debris and repairing drains.
