Laois town shines thanks to Tidy Town volunteers

Laois town cleaned by heroic Tidy Town volunteers

The proud community in the Electric Picnic Laois town are getting out on the street to ensure it shines this summer.

Stradbally Tidy Town Tuesdays have kicked off, with great volunteers out working tirelessly each week.

Local activists meet up every Tuesday evening at 7pm in Stradbally and choose a location to clean up somewhere in the town.

Already Hunter’s Lane, Main Street and Court Square are among the places where people have made their presence visible.

Volunteers Mary Kissane, Laura Gorman and Mairead Moynihan (pictured below) started off last week’s Tuesday evening clean-up, the women enjoying the chats with the local residents too.

Nuala Monaghan, Emer Liston and Ann Simpson worked hard with weeding and flowering.

Sandra Conlan and her son Conor, were out early on Tuesday cleaning from the Glebe, up Church Ave then left to Cosby National School and across the road up to Simpsons Gala.

A new watering gismo patented by Cathal Simpson was on show for the first time, this allowed people to carry water in a trolley while a battery pumped the water out easily.

Nuala worked tirelessly weeding along the bridge (pictured above) while Niall Fingleton (below) collected rubbish along the streets.

A big litter pick took place in the past week on the Timahoe Road, with George, Sean, Audrey and Niall doing major work in moving litter and debris from one of the town's finest approach roads.

Stradbally Tidy Towns encourages those that can pick for 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes to try and do so, many hands make light work.

Anyone can get involved, with bags and litter pickers available at any time from Simpsons Gala, Main Street.

If you’re interested, chat to any of the volunteers or call into Simpsons Gala or Sylvesters for more information, and join their WhatsApp text group to keep updated.
