Beginners guide to bog beauties in Laois

Abbeyleix Bog has become cemented into the living heritage of 21st Laois thanks to the ongoing mainly voluntary efforts of local people to make it an amenity for Laois and people everywhere.

So what better place for some Heritage Week events and the Bog at Killnamuck near the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel will be the venue for activities in Laois from August 12 to 20.

First up is Bog Buddies or what you might call the Bog for beginners event on Friday, August 18 starting at 6.30pm

"Introduce a friend or family member to the Abbeyleix bog," says the Abbeyleix Bog Project.

"We’re encouraging all our regular bog visitors and volunteers to bring someone new along to discover the bog for the first time. Join long-standing volunteers and long time visitors together with their guests to take a stroll on the bog and experience it firsthand for yourself.

"Afterwards we’ll continue the conversations locally with a light bite and a cold drink for anyone who’s interested," say the organisers.

The Bog Budied day will be followed on Saturday, August 19 at 10am by an event called Abbeyleix bog - Family Nature Morning.

Anyone coming is asked to meet at the entrance from Abbeyleix Manor Hotel carpark. Eircode R32 VE24.
