A Laois fundraising volunteer Alice Culliton, known for her commitment to worldwide humanitarian causes, is stepping up once again to rally support for families hit by climate change induced famine in Africa.

Having worked with Concern Worldwide in some of the world’s most challenging humanitarian situations for over 20 years, retired teacher Alice Culliton from Mountmellick has again felt compelled to take action.

Alice is set to undertake Concern's annual 24-hour fast again this year, and will hold a collection mid-fast at SuperValu in Mountmellick, on Friday November 24.

It is her response to the relentless climate-induced hunger crisis in Niger, Africa.

‘The urgency of the situation in Niger demands immediate attention and support, and I believe every effort, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in the lives of those struggling to secure their next meal,’ she told the Leinster Express.

Alice spoke to the CEO of Concern, David Regan, at Portlaoise Parish Centre on Friday, November 3, during an update to Laois supporters of their work.

"David gave an enlightening update of Concern’s work in some such areas and reminded us of the tremendous value of the funds raised which get the response of action in motion to the people in greatest need. While going to work overseas is not an option now, I find doing the fast and fundraising is my contribution," she said.

She explained that the people of Niger are seeing devastating droughts and destructive floods, causing food insecurity and hardship.

She thanks everyone who is supporting her.

"I appreciate the support and involvement of the Mountmellick Concern Group in this fundraising effort. Anna and John Reddin, Ann Maher and Kitty Creighton will be there in SuperValu to help me during the day on November 24. A thanks to SuperValu too for allowing me to fundraise there," Alice said.

Concern have praised Alice for her dedication.

"With the ever-growing need for humanitarian work worldwide, Alice’s commitment serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring the community to come together in solidarity and make a tangible difference in the lives of those facing insurmountable challenges.

"Alice’s fundraising endeavours aim to provide essential support, including cash transfers, to empower families to weather the challenges posed by the relentless climate shocks. These transfers not only assist in managing the escalating food prices but also offer families the dignity of purchasing what they need most to sustain themselves and their children.

"Every contribution, no matter how small, holds the potential to transform lives and foster resilience in the face of unparalleled challenges," a Concern spokesperson said.

Between 2010 and 2020, the number of violent conflicts in the world doubled, leading to growing numbers of displaced people, and this year this number reached 100 million for the first time.

"In the same period, the number of countries needing humanitarian support rose from 17 to 69. With this increase, Concern’s emergency and development work is needed now more than ever. With the huge conflicts, news reports of the desperate needs in other areas of the world gets little space," say Concern.
