Following the introduction of public Bolt E-bikes for rent in Portlaoise, councillors want new bikes in their Laois towns too.
"The E-bike scheme worked fantastically in Portlaoise, it needs to be rolled out," Cllr Aisling Moran said at the September meeting of Laois County Council.
"We want to see E-bikes in Rathdowney, Borris-in-Ossory and Mountrath as well," Cllr John King agreed.
The bike rental scheme was launched by the Council in conjunction with the National Transport Authority last July. By the end of August 8,800km were travelled, over 3,514 individual trips. Initially 50 bikes were made available to local people at 40 locations around the county town, with 20 more added in September . There are over 1,000 people registered on the Bolt app to rent the bikes.
The pedal-assisted electric bikes have a range of up to 60km on a single charge. Designed for short trips they have a maximum speed of 25kmph, with users charged at 18c per minute between unlocking and relocking after their journey across Portlaoise.
