Portlaoise Tidy Towns are doing it again, holding a giveaway day of beautiful native Irish trees.

The award winning volunteer Laois group will give away a sapling native tree, absolutely free, to each person who calls in to the Macra Hall in Portlaoise, on Saturday morning, March 7.

Bareroot scots pine, birch, holly, oak, rowan, hawthorn and more will be available to take away, with advice on how and where to plant them to enhance nature in the community for decades to come.

Portlaoise Tidy Towns are also welcoming Laois ecologist Dr Fiona McGowan who will give a talk on native trees.

The giveaway is in association with Laois tree expert Brian Gaynor who is a member of the Trees On The Land charity group, which aims to replant as many trees as possible on Irish soil. It has planted more than three million trees at several thousand sites since 2013.

There will be a Kids' Corner, a Biodiversity information stand, a free prize draw and tea, coffee and sweet treats to make the morning even more tempting.

Portlaoise Tidy Towns welcome new members, and are on a mission this month to clean up all areas of the town, recently collecting 50 bags of litter from estates and approach roads.

The event is supported by Laois Public Participation Network.

The Macra Hall is located off the James Fintan Lalor Roundabout on the Timahoe Road.
