Community Garden is home to art and nature with a special new feature just added.

The diseased trunk of a Sycamore tree has been given an artistic new life that has Abbeyleix buzzing.

Local people who maintain the popular Community Garden were recently faced with a challenge as the trunk had to be cut back to control the spread of disease.

They embraced the challenge and, with some eco-inspired creativity, decided it was an opportunity to highlight one of the newest residents in the garden - the tree bumblebee, which was recorded there last June during the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan Irish Wild Bee Festival, which was hosted in Abbeyleix.

It was the first time the species was recorded in Laois. So, enter talented wood carver Joe Hyde, who worked recently with his trusted chainsaw and other tools to create the bee's shape out of the trunk. More below posts which show the before and after.

The aim of the Garden is to create an eco/organic/artistic social space that will be a pleasure to visit and participate in at the heart of Abbeyleix for people of all ages and physical abilities.

The team involved say it is an all-inclusive endeavour where those who participate in fruit and vegetable growing will benefit from the fruits of their labours whilst learning the skills of gardening within a friendly, supportive social environment.
