A community seed library will be launched in Portlaoise to help residents borrow, grow, and return seeds while supporting local biodiversity.

The new resource in Portlaoise library will offer a range of vegetables, herbs, and pollinator-friendly native flowers and ornamentals selected to encourage biodiversity and people’s connection to nature.

Library members can take seeds free of charge, grow them at home or in shared spaces, and return saved seeds at the end of the season.

“This Seed Library is about more than planting seeds - it’s about nurturing a love for the outdoors through gardening and peer to peer learning,” said Lisa Doyle, Biodiversity Officer at Laois County Council.

“By sharing seeds and knowledge, we’re helping to preserve local varieties, support biodiversity, and strengthen our community’s connection to the natural world.”

The launch event will take place at noon on  March 7 at Portlaoise Library, featuring activities for children on the day.
