Large numbers attended the launch of Laois’ first-ever community seed library aimed at turning back to one of the oldest traditions, saving and sharing seeds. Children enjoyed hands‑on seed‑sowing and colouring activities, while adults received guidance from Carla Jack, who shared expert advice on best practices for successful sowing—both for biodiversity‑friendly gardening and for growing vegetables.

How does it work? - a simple borrow‑grow‑return system. Borrow seeds from the library, grow them at home, in gardens, balconies, or community spaces, and return seeds harvested from your plants for the next user.

The library hosts a diverse range of seeds for gardeners of all experience levels - from beginners to seasoned growers - including herbs, garden flowers, ornamental varieties, and wildflower species beneficial to pollinators and climate-resilient planting.

Early indications show overwhelmingly positive engagement, with a significant number of seed packets borrowed on launch day alone.

Speaking at the launch, the Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council said: “This Seed Library embodies what community spirit and environmental stewardship look like in action. It encourages learning, sharing, and a closer connection to the natural world - values that are central to our vision for a greener Laois.”

Lisa Doyle, Biodiversity Officer, highlighted the project’s importance: “Seeds are the beginning of every habitat. By giving people simple access to sowing and saving seeds, we’re empowering the public to be active participants in biodiversity protection. This initiative makes climate‑friendly gardening more accessible to everyone.”

Bernie Foran, County Librarian added: “Libraries are evolving community spaces that support curiosity, education, and connection. The Seed Library is a perfect example of how we can inspire hands‑on learning and bring people together. We’re delighted to lead the way with the first Seed Library in the county.”

The Seed Library will remain a permanent feature in Portlaoise Library, with plans to expand based on community interest and contributions.

Residents are invited to drop in, borrow seeds, and become part of this growing network of gardeners, biodiversity champions, and seed savers.
