Laois election candidate calls for safety measures at dangerous junction

There are calls for Laois County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland to address the issue and also clean up the area.

Road safety concerns at a dangerous junction near Ballylinan has prompted calls for Laois County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland to address the issue and also clean up the area.

Labour Candidate for the upcoming local elections Eoin Barry said: “The junction at Simmons Mills, close to Ballylinan, is the intersection between two national roads and one of the busiest junctions in county Laois. Despite being discussed at Council meetings in 2022 little has been done to improve road safety in the area.

“The junction has now become a significant eyesore, the area is overgrown with brambles which further reduces visibility for cars turning. There is dumping throughout the junction with tires, couches and other domestic waste scattered all over it. One of the road signs is broken and has yet to be repaired. This is just another example of the failure of this council and government to deliver for people in the Graiguecullen Portarlington municipal district.

“I have reported these to the council for clean up but it is clear that more significant work is required to address road safety and improve the general area. Thousands of people travel by this junction each day.

“This needs to be addressed by both Laois County Council and TII as a matter of urgency."
