Just how much Laois county councillors get paid for the job

Local Election 2024: Wages and expenses earned by local representatives

With 47 Laois people applying for public votes to win the 19 jobs of local representatives this June 7, we checked out how much the four year long job actually pays.

Many of the 19 sitting county councillors in Laois do it as a part-time job, and the basic wage seems to reflect that.

Laois County Council has confirmed the payments.

"The annual remuneration for elected members 1st January 2024 is €29,592 and this will increase from €29,978 with effect from 1st June 2024.

However there are many extra allowances, expenses and payments for extra responsibilities.

Being elected as Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council comes with an added payment of over €10,000 for the year.

The elected chairs of each of the three Municipal Districts are given nearly €3,000 a year and the elected vice chairs get nearly €2,000.

Annual allowances for each councillor can range up to nearly €7,000.

Being elected as the chair of a Strategic Policy Committee gives an allowance of nearly €5,000.

The councillors may also claim thousands of euros annually for travel expenses, attending conferences, meals and training.

The details are all on the Laois County Council website.
