Laois Sinn Féin annual Easter Commemoration
Mountmellick is the 2023 Sinn Féin annual Easter 1916 Rising Commemoration in Laois
The event will take place at a memorial monument in honour of Patrick Phelan which is located where he is interred in St Joseph’s Cemetery, Acragar.
Patrick Phelan was from Wolfe Tone Street in Mountmellick. He was a member of the North Offaly Brigade of the Anti-Treay IRA when he was killed in Brittas, Clonaslee beside the castle, on 9 August 1922 during the Civil War.
A monument was erected by Laois Sinn Féin the place where he was shot in 2008. Vol Phelan is included on the Republican Roll of Honour.
Sinn Féin says participants should assemble on Easter Sunday at the carpark 11.30 am St Joseph’s Cemetery, Acragar.
The oration will be given by the party's Laois Offaly TD Brian Stanley TD.
The event marks the 1916 rebellion in the GPO and other locations which ultimately led to independence for the 26 counties.
