Laois school marks 75 years of community spirit

Special events to mark a milestone at Knock National School took place last Saturday to mark three quarters of a century of education in the Laois community.

The day began with the conclusion of 75km for 75 fundraiser for the school organised by the parent's association.

It involved a 70km hike across the Slieve Blooms on Saturday October 12 followed by a 5 km local walk / run to the school on October 18.

This was followed by events in the school where the Principal Mary Butler began by congratulating the 10 volunteers who walked 75 km to mark 75 years.

“This was a huge challenge! Not only did they do this to mark the 75 years but also to raise funds for the Parents Association which will benefit all of the students in the school and they have also shared their proceeds with a very worthy cause the Keeley D Foundation. We thank you for your huge commitment, dedication and support for this school, whether you are past pupil, parent, staff member or friend, we thank you very much,” principal Mary Butler said.

Ms Butler presented each walker with an oak plaque commemorating the 75 km for 75 years.

“As we celebrate 75 years of this school, it is a moment to pause, to look back with pride, to look around with appreciation, and to look ahead with hope.

"For three-quarters of a century, Knock NS has stood not just as a place of learning, but as a cornerstone of our community, a place where children have been nurtured, friendships have flourished, and values have been passed from one generation to the next," the principal highlighted.

"We remember today, with fondness and respect, all those who have walked through the doors of our school over the decades, students, parents, teachers, and staff, each one leaving their own unique mark on the story of Knock NS,” she said. She also thanked all those who support the school.

“A school does not thrive for 75 years without the strength and dedication of the people around it and in Knock NS we are surrounded by a wonderful community. In celebrating this anniversary, we honour not just the passing of time, but the power of community. We celebrate a legacy of love, learning, faith, and friendship that has shaped generations — and will continue to do so for many years to come," Ms Butler said.

The principal drew everyone’s attention to the wall hanging displayed at the end of the room.

The school was fortunate to be selected to take part in the BLAST Initiative, run through Laois Education Centre. The school was paired with Abbeyleix artist Orla McDonagh who worked with pupils to create something meaningful, that would celebrate the school and mark this very special anniversary.

Each student designed their own individual piece of fabric to represent themselves, and all of these unique creations come together in the larger artwork you see today. At its heart stands a sycamore tree, symbolising the many generations who have passed through Knock NS and the strength and endurance of the community. The variety of leaves represent parents, past and present.

The butterflies honour those who are no longer with us. Other elements reflect the Board of Management, while a threshing machine pays tribute to the community whose support has been vital in helping the school grow and thrive.

A special booklet titled “A Flavour of Knock School’s Story: 1950 to 2025” was also prepared for the day.

“Though we’re a small school, we’re blessed with a big community spirit. I’d like to sincerely thank our dedicated staff, parents, Board of Management, Parents’ Association, and all members of the local community. Your help, whether big or small, is deeply appreciated and never goes unnoticed," Ms Butler finished.

Mass was celebrated later that day in St Lazerian’s Church, Spink with Fr Seán Conlon, Fr Paddy Byrne and Fr Peter Medves concelebrating. Students from 1st to 6th class sang in the choir and said Prayers of the Faithful, while every decade since 1950 was part of the Offertory Procession.
