Importance of building a sustainable and resilient future highlighted event in Durrow at the farm of former IFA president
Resilience and renewal on farms was the focus of a recent farm walk organised by Bank of Ireland on the Walshe family farm in Durrow, which was attended by over 150 people.
The event featured a discussion on resilience, reviewing how the Walshe family farm has developed over time, what they are currently focusing on, and how farmers can best position themselves to withstand any challenges that 2026 may bring.
The family farm will be known to many, as it was where former IFA President Padraig Walshe farmed for many years before his untimely passing in February 2023.
Patrick Gowing, Dairy Specialist with Teagasc, spoke at the event about how to ensure farms are placed to weather any challenges that 2026 might bring. The event was also attended by Aisling Meehan, an agricultural solicitor, who shared practical advice with attendees on succession planning.
Teagasc and the farm organisations say succession planning is a vital consideration for all farmers, ensuring a smooth transition of the farm to the next generation. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

Teagasc advise that proper planning needs to be carried out well in advance of any transfer. It says this can start by discussing within the family the likely outcomes. Discussion with your agricultural adviser/consultant is also advised to guide you in relation to what is available and where to go. Teagasc say this discussion will need to involve your accountant, as good taxation advice is vital.
The agency says there are options available to all farmers, and the best outcomes are achieved when proper planning is conducted early in the process, and good advice is sought.
A statement outlined how the day on the Durrow farm went.
“It was a fantastic opportunity to bring over 150 farmers together to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and highlight the importance of building a sustainable and resilient future for Irish agriculture,” said Bank of Ireland.
Ella, Pat, and Chloe Walshe were thanked for their welcome, showcasing “best-in-class” farming practices.
